A Practically Perfect Fall Getaway
There’s a reason the classic fall film, Practical Magic, chose Coupeville for its setting – it’s historic, picturesque and charming. Yet during the month of October, this seaside enclave takes a fall getaway to the next level. Coupeville is Washington State's second-oldest community and much of downtown harkens back to an era of more than a century ago. Historic buildings that were once livery stables and barber shops are now wine tasting rooms and bookstores. Here are just a few ways to plan a getaway this season:
Do. Come fall, the farms along Ebey’s Landing Historical preserve provide pumpkin patches and harvest activities, Fort Casey State Park and Admiralty Head Lighthouse are especially scenic on a crisp fall day. The town of Coupeville itself provides scarecrows, a “graveyard” and fall activities throughout the of October as detailed in the “Haunting of Coupeville” website.
Taste. While in town, stop in for lunch or dinner at The Oystercatcher, where a husband and wife team make magic with local ingredients. They recently took over a new waterside space (which was Sally’s shop in Practical Magic) for their latest venture, Little Red Hen Bakery. Serving amazing baked goods, breads sourced as locally as possible, even down to the flour.
Stay. Hit the hay in former officer’s quarters at the Fort Casey Inn, or opt for a seaside cabin at The Captain Whidbey Inn.
