Practical Magic Comes Alive in Coupeville 20 Years After Film Release

This fall, the waterfront village of Coupeville on Washington’s Whidbey Island celebrates the 20th anniversary of the release of Practical Magic. Starring Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman and Stockard Channing, this seasonal cult classic chose Coupeville as the film’s setting for its historic, seaport charm that attracts visitors from around the world.

Released in 1998, the film features iconic Coupeville storefronts that capture the historic seaport feel. Most remain unchanged and continue to welcome locals and visitors today. A new travel package helps visitors walk in the film’s footsteps and enjoy the charms of the present-day destination.

Toby's Tavern, known today as a local favorite for Penn Cove Mussels and a beer by the water, was transformed into The Catch and Fry; The Knead and Feed Bakery, famous for its cinnamon rolls and baked goods, was Sally’s (the character played by Sandra Bullock) shop, Verbena Botanicals. The farmers market shown in the movie, shot in downtown Coupeville was stocked with real produce from local farmers and with seafood donated by Penn Cove Shellfish.  In honor of the town’s brush with the silver screen, enjoy a free screening of the movie and celebration of the anniversary on Friday, October 26th, 7 p.m. at the Coupeville Masonic Lodge (804 Main Street, Coupeville).

In addition, Coupeville’s Blue Goose Inn announces a new travel package. Movie buffs are invited to walk in the film’s footsteps with a custom location guide on a self-guided tour, then return to the room for a personal viewing party complete with popcorn and locally-produced wine. The next morning, a full gourmet breakfast is included with every stay.

Available beginning in October, guests who book the “Practical Magic” package will receive a DVD copy of the movie "Practical Magic" (filmed in Coupeville) to watch in-room and to bring home, a bottle of local wine, Movie Theater Buttered Popcorn and a custom Location Guide to the Coupeville scenes in the movie for a self-guided tour.
