Grosgrain Winery and Kiona Vineyards Team up with Pioneer Square D&E For Burger & 'Berger Pop-Up

Sample Kiona Vineyard’s Lemberger Grape, including the sold-out Grosgrain Pétillant Naturel, expertly paired during new limited time offering

The Lemberger grape will take center stage at a “Burger + Berger” pop-up taking place at Pioneer Square D&E beginning August 30. This Seattle neighborhood bistro has partnered with Kiona Vineyards and Grosgrain Winery to feature a special tasting menu during a limited time pop-up from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. on three upcoming Mondays including: August 30, September 13, and September 27. The popular vintage of the Grosgrain 2020 Lemberger Pétillant Naturel is now sold out, with a limited supply available for this pop-up series.

The pairing menu developed by Pioneer Square D&E Head Chef Anthony Tran includes two starters, one of two burger options, a glass of wine, and dessert. The D&E duck burger with shitake mushrooms and red wine demi-glace (tofu substitution option available) is paired with the 2019 Kiona Estate Red Mountain Lemberger, while the Grosgrain 2020 Lemberger Pétillant Naturel, which features the same Lemberger grapes grown by Kiona Vineyards in this naturally fermented sparkling wine, is recommended with an octopus burger with chimichurri aioli and pickled red onions.

Starters for each option include grilled yakitori skewers (choice of chicken or vegetable), and potato croquettes, with a Lemberger sorbet to round out the meal. This set menu is available exclusively on these pop-up dates for $40 per person with additional glass pours and a limited takeout menu available.

“Red Mountain is well-known for Cabernet Sauvignon, and for good reason. But we also have arguably the most influential Lemberger planting in the Western Hemisphere here at the Kiona Estate vineyard,” notes JJ Williams, general manager at Kiona Vineyards. “We’re thrilled to showcase our traditional red wine version alongside the Pet-Nat rosé that Matt and Kelly at Grosgrain have found success with -  all expertly paired by Pioneer Square D&E.”

“Our team is thrilled to be supporting these Washington partners with something outside the box, casual and not something you could get anywhere,” notes Pioneer Square Founder Jonathan Fleming.  “This new take on surf and turf is not something you can find every day, offering a fun and delicious experience.”

A pioneer of the Red Mountain AVA, Kiona has been growing Lemberger since the early years of the family’s estate vineyard in 1980. While Red Mountain’s big reds like Cabernet Sauvignon have become increasingly iconic, the uncommon Lemberger has grown into a cult offering to those in the know.

Pop-up pairings are available for dine-in, patio seating or takeaway. As Pioneer Square D&E continues to manage a safe and sustainable environment for guests and staff, proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required for dine-in guests. Those visiting are now required to show proof of vaccination (a digital copy of a card is acceptable), or a negative COVID-19 test result, taken within the last 48-hours. The restaurant is not typically open Mondays and will continue to operate with its traditional menu of from-scratch bistro fare Wednesday – Sunday.

Kiona Vineyards is a third generation, family-owned winery and vineyard that has been growing and producing in the same location for more than 40 years on what has expanded to five vineyards set on 270 acres on Red Mountain. Kiona’s founder John Williams is a pioneer of the Red Mountain AVA, Washington’s most acclaimed grape growing destinations. Varietals grown and sold range from well-known reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec to under the radar Washington varietals like Sangiovese and Lemberger. The Kiona label can be found throughout the United States and internationally, while more than 60 of the best Washington wineries purchase grapes from Kiona’s vineyards.
