Karoo Café Opens in the Heart of Seattle: A Celebration of South African Culture and Community
Experience New Coffee-to-Cocktails Experience and Community Space in Historic Butterworth Building at Pike Place Market
Now open, Karoo Café — Seattle’s newest coffee-to-cocktails experience — welcomes the community to enjoy its unique blend of South African-inspired hospitality, vibrant atmosphere, and inviting space that encourages connection. Located in the historic Butterworth building at 1921 First Ave within the Pike Place Market, Karoo Café offers a seamless transition from cozy coffees to creative cocktails, creating a dynamic welcoming gathering space. Originally built in 1903, the Butterworth building is one of Seattle’s most iconic spaces, once serving as the city's first mortuary and now standing as a piece of local history with its distinct architecture and central location, making it a storied backdrop for Karoo Café’s modern twist on tradition.
Founded by South African native Olivia Vermaak, Karoo Café is deeply rooted in the philosophy of Ubuntu—a belief in humanity, compassion, and interconnectedness. This spirit is reflected in every aspect of the café, from its intentional design with nods to traditional South African aesthetics to its mission of fostering community through shared experiences. The inviting space draws inspiration from the warm, communal culture of South Africa, creating an atmosphere where guests are encouraged to connect and unwind.
“We wanted to create a space where people can feel a sense of belonging and connection,” says Olivia Vermaak, founder of Karoo Café. “Karoo Café is about more than just great coffee, cocktails and bites—it’s a space for people to gather in a safe space, share stories, and make memories. Whether you’re here for the live music, a game night, or just to relax with friends, we hope you feel the warmth and community that define us.”
Karoo Café partners with local chefs and pop-ups to bring the vibrant flavors of South Africa to Seattle with a tapas-style menu and handcrafted cocktails. Signature drinks include the Durban Doozy, a daring blend of mezcal, fresh pressed pineapple juice and Chakalaka spice; the Witchdoctor’s Brew, where guests can choose their spirit and let the mixologist craft a magical concoction; the Karoo Smoked Old Fashioned, featuring Buffalo Trace Bourbon with a smoky twist; and the Karoo Espresso Martini, a South African take on the classic martini, mixing espresso, Amarula, and vodka.
Starting in late November, Karoo Café will host a variety of community-focused events, including yoga sessions, sound baths, and more. Vermaak’s vision is to offer a space where the Seattle community can come together for wellness, relaxation, and engagement.
“Karoo Café was born from my love for community and my experiences growing up in South Africa,” Vermaak shares. “I want people to feel like they can be themselves here, connect with others, and be part of something bigger.”
